How does a great mobile user experience differ from a great web UX?

User Experience

Rob Miles

Mobile usage continues to grow at an incredibly fast rate. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), mobile web access is expected to overtake the desktop within the next five years. If you aren't already devoting resources to providing your customers and prospects with an outstanding mobile user experience, you should be.

So is designing for a handset the same as creating a web page, only scaled-down? Not really.

There are some similarities between a great web UX and a great mobile UX, but there are some important differences as well.

Aside from the obvious space considerations, when it comes to the mobile platform, context is key. It's important to focus on what mobile does well—which is often different than what the desktop experience does well.

Mobile has location-context and immediacy in it's favor; a smart UX developer will take advantage of mobile's unique ability to reach customer exactly when and where they're most likely to show up at your business and make a purchase.
